PC to AV reciver

I wanted to connect my PC's sound to a reciver but im not sure if it would work:It says on microsoft ( http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/mce/expert/connect_av.mspx ) that it is possible to connect to a reciver using 1/8in stereo-to-L/R RCA, only problem is that how do you know which of the two RCA plugs spliting from the 1/8in contains the Sub and Center channel. Im afride if i try to find out through trial and error somthing is going to be damaged.I have spoken to one of the audio technicians at the Bose store and he said it would not be possible since the output signal of the sound card is ''to complex for the reciver to handle'' since it is two distinct channels in one plug.Then i turn around i find that Creative sells a DTS Line to Op/Co converter (http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1%26subcategory=16%26product=14191)So now i dont know what to purchase and if this is even possible or not, any ideas? You connect your speakers to the sub with speaker wire, then speaker wire from the sub back to the amp, then a rca to 3.5mm connector to a 3.5mm cable into the sound card.
or if you dont have speaker wire connectors on your sub, just buy two rca to 3.5mm cables, you should have a sub channel and a l/r channel on your sound card if you dont just buy some cheap 7.1 card EDIT:Sorry i read that wrong, How many channels are you trying to connect?
If it's just stereo sound. There's no problem with the way you just mentioned if you only connect the ''front'' 3.5mm connector to the receiver. If you want true surround, you'll want to fork out the cash for a sound card with optical out (that's if your receiver is able to take optical as well).

actully i think i found the answer http://creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1%26subcategory=16%26product=14309 it says on step 3 that the Red RCA is subwoofer
