Raid 1 with two different sized hdd

Question for all those Raid gurus. I have a 200gb sata 3.0 hdd and I was thinking about getting a 500gb sata 3.0 hdd. Now, I was wondering if I could use the 200gb and the 500gb set up as a Raid 1, but be able to use what's left on the 500gb as a separate drive as 300gb will be unused in the Raid setup. Or do I have to dedicate the whole 500gb drive to the 200gb drive? Or does Raid 1 require both drives to be the same size?Raid 1 with two different sized hdd
Bad idea. You won't be able to use the 300 GB left.Raid 1 with two different sized hdd
I'm no expert but think both drives have to be the same size. But you might be able to partition the drive so only 200 GBs of the larger one is used for the RAID config and the rest can eb like a spare, but I've never tried this so I would know.
the partitions is not a bad idea, wondering if that will work. I ask about the setup because I was going to buy a 500gb WD external for $110, but if I can get a 500gb internal for a little cheaper ($90) and be able to run Raid, then I might just go with the latter.
Partitioning is done after the RAID configuration. You can't use the same disk in different RAIDs.
Yeah, you're right. I guess it is done in the Bios. I have a Mac at work and you setup the Raid from within the OS. I'm starting to get comfused from switching between my Mac at work and my PC at home lol
You can software RAID in windows........
