I know, but all the marketing they are doing for Vista with Vista exclusive games....I just thought I should go ahead and get Vista...well thanks for your help!:)

Dont get the 64bit since it has to many incompatabileties for games and software that need the 32 bit. So get the 32 bit instead.
Dont get the 64bit since it has to many incompatabileties for games and software that need the 32 bit. So get the 32 bit instead.
Really? Thanks for the heads up. I`ll have to look in to it a little more I guess.
Ok, let me clarify this. When I buy this, I WILL have Windows Vista...I wont need to buy anything else...right?????
The System Builder packs are basically a way of getting a legal Windows Vista without having to pay the full retail price. However, I know that in the case of at least Vista Ultimate (retail), it does provide both the 32-bit install and 64-bit install discs in the package... the System builder packs do not. You'd have to choose either a 32-bit version of Vista or a 64-bit version of Vista. My personal recommendation is if you're serious, get a 64-bit Vista, since at least Microsoft is attempting to bring it into the mainstream, and it'd be silly to have only bought a 32-bit Vista by then. But at the same time, I also suggest picking up an OEM copy of Windows XP as a base so that in the event that you find something that currently won't work with Windows Vista (there are a lot of manufacturers that are basically avoiding it at least until it gets a service pack), that you'll have a way of still being able to use the stuff. Obviously, the essentials to make a computer run will HAVE to have Vista drivers, but a lot of printers/peripherals even now aren't getting Vista drivers, and some have flat out chose not to support Windows Vista or release new products until it's had at least one service pack to fix many of the issues that the OS has currently. Then again, I personally wouldn't install Vista until it's had at least a service pack or two as well. At least Windows XP had some obvious benefits over Windows 9*/Me and in some cases, Windows 2000 when it first came out. And 't3h d1r3ctX +3|\| !11!11!1!!' alone is not enough to make me want to get a copy.
I read there is alot of conflicts between Vista 64bit and some hardware. So I looked at the Vista 32bit.....and its only problem is that if you have more than 4gigs. of ram-the future will need that-...you cant use it, or atleast thats how I read it. So I dont know what to do. I dont want to get both Vista and XP, but I want to be able to play the stupid Vista only games.....I`m screwed.

The Games for Windows certification already makes it have to require support for widescreen monitors and multi-core processors, so if you're talking about something like Shadowrun, Halo 2 or even Call of Juarez now, you should be fine with the 64-bit copy.In principle, 32-bit applications should work just fine in the 64-bit Windows OS's. The reality though is that some of them get unstable because of certain coding flags that were not added to have proper compatibility in a 64-bit environment. Generally, these could simply be addressed through a post-install patch, but if the devs that made the app/game are defunct or stopped supporting the app in question, that's when it's a good idea to have a 32-bit OS available to run it on.
So you are saying that the 64bit would be my best bet? I really don't want to buy two OS`s. And which types of hardware would the 64bit conflict with?
So you are saying that the 64bit would be my best bet? I really don't want to buy two OS`s. And which types of hardware would the 64bit conflict with?
64-bit OS's don't conflict with hardware anymore than a 32-bit OS would...What can happen that would make a piece of hardware not work in a 64-bit OS is that a 64-bit OS basically requires a 64-bit driver in order for the hardware to function. It can run 32-bit software and applications sure, but drivers for hardware HAVE to be 64-bit.It's not ideal, but right now, having Windows XP in addition to Vista is still the ideal if you want to be absolutely sure that you'll be able to run both old stuff (and games) and existing software/peripherals/hardware that may not be compatible with Vista. Or simply... run XP for now, hang onto that copy of Vista until Microsoft provides a service pack, then give it a go once you can successfully slipstream a service pack for Vista.
Thanks, I`ll probably just get Windows XP Media Center Edition and wait until everything is ok with Vista...any objections to that?
